Please Note: This shot being celebrated in the photo won one of our games this past season.  There was nothing lucky about it.  This shot went in because of the sacrifices made during the eight months that led up to the season.  Don't wait until you graduate to learn the simple life lesson that basketball teaches: Success only comes with sweat and sacrifice.  Apply that to every facet of your life while in high school and you will be fine.

Challenge Yourself First, Outwork Your Teammates Second & Finally Outplay Your Opponents
To play this game in front of cheering crowds you have to do the following: Dream about playing in-front of cheering crowds, spend hours upon hours upon hours working to acquire the skills and the experience required to play before cheering crowds and ultimately be deserving of playing before cheering crowds.  You also have to find friends - teammates that want to work with you and compete to outwork you on a daily basis.  You will only get out what you put in.  Did you think you are different? Bleachers were made for a reason and so where benches.  Only 5 people, only five players can play at one time.  Where do you want to be?  We have all taken turns being on the bench and sitting in the bleachers, but a basketball player dreams and then works to be on the court.  Earn your playing time.  It won't be given to you and the same goes for confidence.  They are both earned.  Your confidence will always match your skill level and your skill level is determined by what you do on a daily basis.  A coach does not give you confidence and a coach does not give you playing time.  They are both earned.  What is true in life is also true in the game of basketball.  Who gets the job, who gets the promotion and who realizes their dreams is not about luck.  Luck has nothing to do with it.   REMEMBER: You are what you do daily.  IF basketball is not what you chose to do then please, find some other meaningful and positive endeavor and pursue it with a purpose, a passion and with persistence.  IF basketball is what you need to do, not just what you want to do and you are willing to pay the price, know that before you have the chance to outwork and outplay your opponent you must do two things first: Challenge yourself on a daily basis and then outwork and outplay your teammates.  Your skills and your ability to play this game are a measure of what you do alone, what you have done without a coach and what you do alongside your friends - teammates in the preseason.   Please Note: There is no off-season in this game if you plan on playing it in front of cheering crowds.   This does not mean you should not play other sports or be involved with other positive and worthwhile endeavors.  You have only four years and you have to make the most of it.  Be involved in everything you can while you can.  Be involved in student government, clubs and other sports, but remember, you have to continue your skill development.  Organize your time.  Make your time work for you. Compete with each other first and develop a common dream, a collective dream.  Know this: You are entitled to nothing and there are no shortcuts, so don't bother looking for one.  The time and energy spent looking for shortcuts and a way out of the required work is wasted time which you will never, ever get back.  Don't bother.  The choice is yours and yours alone.  Do you really want to or do you need to play before cheering crowds?  Are you deserving of playing in front of cheering crowds? Whatever the answer is please take full advantage of your high school years.  They will fly by and don't have regrets.

Look at the photo.  Do you want to play in this environment or just say you do?  You either do or you don't.  There is no middle ground.  The only way to get there is through a MISSION.  There is no short-cuts or convenient way there.

MISSION - an important assignment carried out for political, religious, athletic or commercial purposes, typically involving a process and sacrifice

Over the years there have been many student-athletes and teams at SHS that have made individual and collective efforts to be the best they possibly could be.  They were on a mission.  One team that stands out was the 2012-13 team. They loved to play basketball together. Their mission was not often talked about. It is not shared here. Talk is cheap and they were not into wearing t-shirts that said "raw-raw" stuff. They found ways to play together all on their own a lot.  Many of them played multiple sports and were encouraged to do so by the program, but they always found time to play together.  Part of their mission and commitment to each other was demonstrated by attending spring, summer and fall leagues routinely and with regularity. They also worked on their individual basketball skills throughout the year. You are what you do. Basketball players play basketball and work on their skill-set. Basketball players work at the game regardless of convenience. It is never what a coach wants, it is about what the players collectively and individually need.  This team was never shocked or intimidated by an opponent. Why? Because of the strength of their mission and one more important factor: They also had experienced the "rodeo." They played a ton of competitive basketball growing up with and against each other in travel, AAU and pick-up. What is the rodeo? The rodeo is what we call in our program competitive "NEED to win" basketball. Not when you "feel like it" basketball, not "when you have the time" basketball or just "shooting around in the drive-way" basketball, but the type of basketball that requires daily sacrifice, a sense of urgency and sweat. Are you on a mission?  Are you part of a team that is on one?  Don't kid yourself, not all players or teams have a mission.  I hope you get be part of team that is on one, it is special.
