Varsity Try Outs – All Seniors and Juniors report to varsity tryouts Monday, November 29, by 2:50 PM in the main gym. Underclassmen asked by Coach Poirier to tryout for the varsity team please report to the main gym by 2:50 PM as well. At the conclusion of Tuesday night’s second tryout, juniors, sophomores and younger candidates not being selected to the varsity team will be given two additional nights of tryouts with the combined JV and Freshmen tryouts. Please be on time ALWAYS.
Junior Varsity and Freshmen Try Outs – All Freshmen and Sophomores candidates please report to the hallway between the large and small gyms Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday TBD. Freshmen and JV tryouts will run TBD. At that time each night all candidates will meet with Coaches Poirier, Coach Jordan, Coach Mahery, Coach Eromin and Coach Hult. Please be on time ALWAYS.
Note from Coach Poirier: Thursday, December 2, 2021 is the last day of try-outs. After the completion of the final night of tryouts each of the team’s roster will be emailed to the respective candidates. Also, coaches will be available to speak with candidates that would like to meet directly after the last tryout in the coach’s office. Coaches will be available to speak with anyone who would like to discuss why they did not make their respective teams the following day as well. This is never an easy process but does need to be done. There are only so many uniforms per team. I admire everyone for choosing to tryout. Final team rosters for all teams will be emailed to the principal, assistant principals and to the athletic director that same night. Friday's practice schedule will be made known that night as well on Thursday night.
Suggestions: Remember what was discussed at the preseason meeting. Don't come into any tryout situation in any sport unprepared to compete. Keep this simple: Be in competitive basketball shape. How do you get into competitive basketball shape? Play competitive basketball. How this is a mystery is beyond me. OK? Also, please wear sneakers that are broken-in and have been worn to play basketball. Wear basketball sneakers, not running sneakers and reversible jersey if you have one. Do not worry if you don't. I would also strongly recommend that you are not late. Recently I attended a local university's first day of basketball tryouts and the head-coach made very clear, "This is a tryout, impress me." This is great advice. Do come into the season prepared to impress the coaching staff. Please do not eat heavy before a try-out and please review the itinerary provided, but mostly, please come prepared to COMPETE. Be PREPARED and not just READY. Be confident. Competitive basketball requires you to play with confidence. Please remember: Confidence is not given, confidence is earned and is never free. You must earn your Scituate basketball uniform just as you must earn your confidence and your playing time. You are what you do daily. Competitive basketball requires a player to play competitively all the time, not when it is convenient and not when a person feels like it. High School basketball is competitive and challenging.
Players that LOVE the game do everything within their power to compete at the highest level. Players that love the game, dream about the game. Players that love the game are the hardest to guard because they are always prepared to compete every second of the game. They wear down their opponents who have not made an equivalent everyday effort. People who work hard are more successful than people who don't work hard. This is a fact of the game of basketball and is more importantly a fact of life. If you love something, you will pursue it. "Hard to Guard" players are players that love the game and their confidence is unshakable. Confidence is acquired through the pursuit of excellence. You may not get to the point of excellence, but if you pursue it, confidence will be earned along the way. Your confidence going into a calculus or chemistry final exam derives from whether or not you have prepared daily through your study habits. YOU ARE WHAT YOU DO DAILY. You cannot just show up and expect success. This is never about what your dad and mom want, what your teachers want or what your coaches want, this is about what you want or even more, this is about what you need. What is true in life is also true in the development of your confidence to play competitive basketball. Cheryl Swoopes' in her acceptance speech at the 2016 Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony said, "The more I played, the more confident I became." In her speech she made clear that her success and her confidence was not based on AAU play or formal coaching situations, but on her wiliness to simply sacrifice and make a daily commitment to earn it. No amount of money spent, fancy sneakers or uniforms made her confident. Her confidence was earned through her pride, passion and perseverance. "The more I played, the more confident I became." How simple and how true that statement is. Apply that same simple principal to your daily life. "The more I studied the more confident I became and the better my grades became. The more I prepped for the SAT's the more confident I became and the higher I scored on the SAT's." Remember: If you have done all that you can to prepare yourself to succeed in any endeavor, you deserve the right to BE CONFIDENT. I don't wish you good luck. Go out and make your luck.
The entire program’s season scrimmage, practice & game schedule will be given out on Friday December 3rd at the annual program dinner in the school cafeteria 6 - 7 PM. More importantly, our expectations and objectives of the season will be discussed. PLEASE HAVE YOUR PARENTS ATTEND.
Friday December 3 Practice Times will be as follows: Varsity 2:50 - 5 PM & Freshmen & JV Practice will be announced by Thursday, December 2, 2021. The entire practice schedule will be announced at the December 3, 2021 annual program family dinner for all teams.

Click on the attachment below the photo of 2009 SHS graduate and team captain Anthony Parham to review tryout evaluation form. The "Big Cat" or "Big ANT" never played organized basketball until his sophomore year of high school. The effort he made to become a team captain and a league all-star still inspires. Anthony is one of the many exceptional SHS graduates and players who have worn a Scituate blue basketball jersey. Anthony loved the success of the team over his own stats, minutes or newspaper clippings. KNOW YOUR SCITUATE BASKETBALL HISTORY. Anthony is now an officer serving in the Boston Police Department. Anthony will be one of the graduates who routinely visits. REMEMBER: PLAY HARD, BIG ANT IS ALWAYS WATCHING!
