Charles Kerins was a famous artist who lived in town and had a studio on Buttonwood Lane in the Minot area. He routinely used Scituate and Scituate residents as the inspiration for many of his paintings including the famous painting shown above from the 1967 Converse Basketball Yearbook. The Converse Basketball Yearbook was a big deal and if you were a basketball fan, you read each's years edition cover to cover. I have this edition in my house. I strongly believe this is Coach Larry Keenan who passed away in 2011, shown being thrown into the shower. The shower depicted is the exact shower of the old Gates Middle School locker-room which served as Scituate's high school until 1962 when the current high school was opened. Mr. Keenan was a much loved and respected teacher, coach and athletic director at Scituate High School for decades. Our athletic conference, the Patriot League's Keenan Division, is named in his honor. He was Scituate High School's boys' varsity basketball coach for 10 years from 1958 to 1968 and retired from Scituate Public Schools in 1980. I had the honor of speaking to him before he passed away. He loved Scituate and Scituate Basketball!
Why RED? That is a good question. Charles Kerins paintings according to my research used only two primary colors, red being one of them. During this time it was less expensive to use only two primary colors in this type of painting that was intended to be reproduced in large numbers. Red was chosen as one of the main colors.
