Coach Svensen was a teacher, coach, athletic director and assistant principal at Scituate High School for many years. Coach Svensen passed away in 1996. From 1996 to 2018, the annual Paul Svensen Memorial Basketball Tournament raised money to support Scituate kids and Scituate athletics including the Paul Williams annual Scholarship. TKO'Malleys restaurant in Scituate Harbor has been a tireless supporter of the Scituate community, the tournament and the Paul Williams annual scholarship and without their support this tournament would have never taken place. Although TKO'Malleys will not be taking part in this year's tournament, we would like to thank Rich Lenahan, TK's general manager for all of his efforts and support for the past 20 years of not just our tournament, but the Scituate community as well. No one gives back to the Scituate community like TKO'Malleys. This year, the Scituate Recreation Department will be sponsoring our annual tournament and we would like to thank the Scituate Recreation director Maura Glancy and assistant director Nick Lombardo for their support. I would also like to thank the SBA president Brian Rojik for all of his help and assistance.
The Paul Williams Annual Scholarship is a $1000 scholarship given each year at the Awards and Scholarship Presentation Night at Scituate High School. Paul Williams was a Scituate High School student and a member of the boys’ basketball program who tragically passed away in 2003. Over the past twelve years a scholarship in Paul's name has been awarded to a Scituate High School senior chosen by the school's guidance counselors, teachers and administration. Each recipient chosen was first and foremost a good citizen and a person held in high regard not just at the high school, but the Scituate community as well. Other criteria considered was the person must have successfully met the terms of graduation either in day or night coursework and like Paul planning to pursue a trade or technical degree. Paul wanted one day to work as mechanic fixing cars. This is a very different scholarship for a very deserving individual and believe it or not has nothing to do with basketball. Over the years our tournament participants many of who are SHS basketball alumni understand what our tournament is about. They all want to play basketball, have a great meal at TKO'Malleys while enjoying the beautiful harbor views with family and friends, but they are also aware of our motivation behind the tournament and they do act accordingly. The tournament is a special event. Ultimately, the real reward for all of our efforts is simple: I see the pride that Paul William's mother takes each spring when the annual scholarship winner is announced and we also believe that there is no better way to honor Coach Svensen as well. Thank you for your involvement and look forward to seeing everyone next year.

Gentlemen, first and foremost, we are raising money for a good cause, therefore Good Sportsmanship is required by all whom participate, and to be maintained throughout the tournament. There will be families, children of all ages, attending the tournament, therefore you and your team's professional manner and good sportsmanship is required on and off the court, at all times. Many people have put in hours of their free time, and effort, in order to make this an enjoyable and successful experience for all who participate, and attend. Please keep this in mind and remember: IT IS ONLY A GAME!
1. Cost $120. Checks made out to "SSRB" and must be paid prior to first game, or no play. Customarily we ask $20 per participant and over the years people have exceeded this donation.
2. All players must sign an injury waiver form when they check in, prior to playing. No signature= No play!
3. Players must wear uniforms provided by tournament, throughout their participation in the tournament.
4. Games consist of two 20 minutes halves, with stop time during the last 2 minutes of each half. For both divisions, clock will continue to run if score is 11 or more points. Overtime will be 2 minutes, with stop time the last 30 seconds.
5. It is a Single-Elimination Tournament.
6. Two time-outs/team, per game, with one allotted in overtime. No carryover.
7. A player fouls out on his fifth personal foul, and teams shoot bonus on the seventh, and two shots after ten. Technical fouls count as personal and team fouls. Intentional fouls are one shot in addition to the shots if player was shooting, plus the ball. Two technical fouls in a game by one player is automatic expulsion from the tournament. Technical fouls will be one shot, plus possession. Flagrant fouls count as technical fouls, except two shots will be awarded, plus possession, and expulsion from tournament. Fighting and foul language should not even be an issue, but if it should happen, the parties involved will be expelled from the tournament, and restaurant. Referees and Tournament Organizers have the right to eject any team or individual whom cannot maintain professionalism during the tournament. Personal and team conduct, on and off the court is a determining factor on whether individuals, teams, and coaches will be invited back in the future to participate. Represent yourself, sponsor, team, and community, properly and professionally.
8. On free throws, the ball is live when it leaves shooters hands.
9. Dunking is permitted during the games, not in warm-ups, and no hanging on rim, unless to prevent injury. If you do hang, it will be a intentional foul, and loss of points.
10. All officials, scorekeepers, & timekeepers are donating their free time this weekend. They are to be respected at all times, and are to be thanked by teams at the end of each game. Maximum of 10 players per team. A team cannot start the game with four players. Players must play in the first game to be eligible to play later games. No exceptions. This is an immensely important rule. Plan on getting your team to the first game.
TEAM CAPTAIN RESPONSIBILITIES: MESSAGE FROM TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS
Captains please remember your rosters are your responsibility. We are going to have families attending the tournament and everyone must understand that a proper example and respect needs to be shown by your teams. Believe me I understand about playing hard and being fired up to play this great game of basketball and if anyone knows a better team game than basketball, please let me know, but you got to play right. Basketball is the best game on earth. We want people who want to play with passion, we just do not want people who can not properly channel that passion. We do not need people to participate if they can not handle themselves like the men they are supposed to be. REMEMBER: GOOD PEOPLE ONLY. We think one of the best parts of this tournament over the years is getting the chance to catch-up with the people who have participated year in and year out. We also enjoy spending time getting to meet-greet and get to know the new generation of players that join us each year. Seriously, I do not want thugs, punks, whiners and losers. So please chose your rosters wisely. As a high school and youth coach, I put great demands on my captains to assist me in keeping a team properly focused. Each year, ALL of you have done a great job getting this done. Plan on being the voice of reason for your respective teams. We have never really had someone get out of hand, I just want to make sure we all work to keep it that way.
Again, we are raising money for a scholarship for a deceased former player Paul Williams. The name of the tournament is to honor the memory of a Scituate teacher/coach/assistant principal and athletic director Mr. Paul Svensen. Most folks won't care what the tournament is all about, they will just want to play basketball, enjoy the day in Scituate and look at the beautiful harbor and that is all good. I just want you to know our motivation behind the tournament. I see the pride that Mrs. Williams takes each spring when the annual scholarship winner is announced and I also believe that there is no better way to honor Mr. Svensen's memory.
I hope this is clear. We look forward to the tournament and seeing everyone soon. I will be sending out the team rules, entry fee and schedule information within the next week so please stay tuned. Enjoy the weekend and the great fall weather.
