"Pressure is what you put in tires." - Sir Charles Barkley
NO ONE SAID IT BETTER: THIS IS WHAT WE ARE ABOUT!
ALSO REMEMBER: EYES OF THE COMMUNITY ARE ON US.
"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Scituate Basketball: 100 Years and counting. You can be part of this program. Be proud of yourself, family, town and school. Be good sons, citizens and be excellent student-athletes (not athletic-students). Don't kid yourself, this is a challenge. Remember the name in the front of the jersey matters, not as much as the name on the opposite side, but remember to represent both on and off the court. Represent yourselves positively and do so regardless of the score, situation or the opponent's actions. There is no "I" in TEAM, but there is a ME. Figure this out and find your balance. Playing hard is a skill, it requires toughness, tenacity and experience. Make winning efforts in all that you do, all the time! Ultimately it is not what your Mom and Dad want, it is never what a coach wants, it is about what you want as well as what your teammates collectively want too. The only way to play competitive basketball is to play competitive basketball against the best competition you possibly can as much as you can. It also requires an equal effort to develop the skills necessary to play the game (shooting, passing and dribbling) on your own - all alone. All you need is a work-ethic, ball, hoop and a dream. No one said that this was easy, but what objective worth achieving is? Outwork your future opponents NOW, not in season. Have fun with friends that will be part of your lives beyond Scituate High School.
YOU CAN DO THIS IF YOU ARE IN THE HABIT OF OUTWORKING YOUR OPPONENT
Scituate Basketball: No Slogan Required - It's Not Our Bag
1937 Brockton YMCA South Shore Basketball Tournament Runner-Up
On a hot summer afternoon in August, 2014 after the kids from our Scituate Recreation Basketball Camp had left for the day, this simple plaque shown below was found by Mark Hernandez '15 and I as we searched all over Scituate High School for past boys' basketball memorabilia, trophies and plaques. We had recently discovered that a number of trophies and plaques dating back decades had been lost so we took upon ourselves to catalog and photograph what we could find at SHS for posterity. Like an archaeological dig, we meticulously searched every inch of the school, we took account of what areas of the school we had searched over the course of an entire week. Thinking we had searched every one of the school's trophy cabinets and closets all around the building and just when we thought our search was no longer going to bare fruit, we found the most amazing of artifacts. It was stuck behind a number of recent trophies and barely in view. The plaque did not look like much at first, but as we dusted it off and tried to figure out the faded words which we could barely discern, it donned on us that we were looking at the oldest basketball relic in our school's long and amazing athletic history. The plaque simply read: 1937 Brockton YMCA South Shore Basketball Tournament Runner-Up. I researched and was able to find a photo of the 1937 team. Know your history and be proud. Remember: Scituate students with so much less opportunities than we, have left an amazing legacy both academically and athletically. Our job is to build on the academic and athletic legacy they left us.

Take advantage of your four years at Scituate HIgh School. Don't have regrets later in life. Take with you the knowledge you did all that you could while you were here to prepare yourself for your future endeavors. Be a student first. Be an athlete second. Be a student-athlete. Play as many sports as you can, involve yourself in clubs, student committees and after school programs that create as many positive and memorable moments as possible. Take advantage of everything SHS offers. Be positive and never say, "I am bored." Being bored, ain't good. The hardest decision you will make in high school is who you call your friends. Don't make good friends, make great friends. Remember a real friend, a great friend would never allow you to do anything contrary to your parents' or guardians' wishes. Your parents and guardians love you, support you and pay the bills - you don't. You are bound to follow their wishes until you pay the bills. I am 58 and although not here, my parents are still guiding me. If you don't listen to them what gives you the right to ask your own future children to listen to you? Make the most of your time, take care of you first, but also lead and help those around you.
